Ep. 20: The Electoral College

There’s been so much hype about the electoral college over the past few months.  And yet I feel like most people I talk to don’t understand it at all.  I want to put the issue to bed with an episode dedicated to this mysterious beast.  I start by finalizing my analysis of the 2016 election … read more

For those of you who don’t celebrate Christmas, or the heralding in of a New Year, we of course wish you happiness and success too – so please don’t send me hate mail or anything ha ha. But seriously, this year has presented some difficult challenges for a lot of folks out there, what with the divisive election and general negativity/hysteria generated largely by the Establishment Media. Even Santa Claus (as pictured in the cartoon above), isn’t sure what to do! However, as libertarians and voluntaryists, I think we’ve got some really compelling reasons as to why we can extend the olive branch of peace to others and celebrate the Holiday season with all – and continue to look forward to a hopeful future of “peace on Earth and goodwill towards men”!

Thoughts or suggestions? Leave a comment! ! Check out our graphics page for even MORE of our exclusive libertarian cartoons and infographics! Episode 31 – Inconceivable!

We didn’t say the word Inconceivable while discussing the great Princess Bride movie, which is in itself inconceivable. Robert lists this as one of his favorite movies and we endeavor to pack a few libertarian messages into this familiar story. Also, spoiler alert, I make a mistake on a word definition that Robert is correct on – and I smugly, and incorrectly, try to correct him. Oh well. We hope you enjoy the show!

Workplace Safety

It’s widely believed that it was the intervention of government and labour unions which is responsible for improving safety conditions in factories and other industries, but that is not accurate. This graph demonstrates that workplace fatalities were already very much on the decline before OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) was even founded in America:

Effect of OSHA work workplace fatalities:

Tom DiLorenzo wrote in Capitalism “Enriches the Working Class“:
“Capitalism has also made the workplace safer. In relatively “dangerous,” strenuous, or dirty jobs, employers must pay a wage premium because relatively few people want such jobs. Economists call this a “compensating difference.” The man who rides on the outside of the garbage truck at daybreak, in the winter, in the northern states, does so because he makes a very good salary – better than any of his alternatives. Profit-seeking capitalists have always understood that they need to pay more to get people to perform risky or dangerous work. Therefore, they have also always understood that there is profit in making the work place safer. A safer workplace requires a lesser compensating difference. Lower wages paid to the workers can mean higher profits for the capitalist. Thus, the American workplace had become safer and safer for generations before the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was established in the 1970s. Indeed, OSHA has often reduced workplace safety with its clumsy and stupid workplace rules enforced by government bureaucrats with no knowledge of the specific work that they are regulating. ”

The government can intervene to bring about workplace safety faster, but this will not be without any negative consequences to their employees.

Do you really think those workplace safety advancements were paid for out of the factory owners pockets? Well they weren’t. They were paid for out of the workers pockets. Employers have a certain amount to budget for labour and it makes zero difference to them whatsoever if that gets spent on wages, health and safety, health insurance, company cars or anything else the employees might want to receive as payment in kind. On a free market employees will tend to get roughly the package of spending on them that they want because if a workplace is too dangerous they can go somewhere across the road that pays them less and spends more on safety. As recent empirical evidence of this the economist Benjamin Powell actually went to factories in the poorest countries in the world and asked them if they would like better health and safety, shorter hours, and a long list other benefits; overwhelmingly they said yes to everything – who wouldn’t? – Unless those benefits meant less pay. In which case they declined them all. This is why workplace safety was shoddy when people were poor, but improved as people got richer. When you’re broke you’d rather your employer spent the money on your wage than health and safety. However, as your standard of living increases safety at work becomes more of a priority so your expectations on your employer go up. This would all arranged voluntarily even without legislation from government. In fact it was! If employers were responsible for injuries or deaths they may have been sued for damage in common law courts for having caused harm or loss.

The best defense of workers rights is having the largest choice of employers available as possible. All of the things which the left think will help workers reduces their number of options by making employing people profitable to less employers and therefore reducing the options of workers rather than increasing them. The consequence of having less jobs to go around is that low skilled workers have to accept whatever is going on whatever terms are offered to them, and often tolerate crappy bosses. On a free market, some people might have to tolerate a less well paid job in the short term, but if they have a bad boss or do not like the safety conditions at work they can easily walk into a job elsewhere because anyone can employ them. This is a system of spiritual advancement. A wise individual can choose the job that will teach them the most skills, then move to the next one, and onto the next, and keep on moving from job to job gathering skills until they can get a management position, start their own business, or become a staff trainer or consultant themselves. It affords the maximum opportunity for class mobility. Each well-intentioned socialist policy: the minimum wage, maximum regulations, workplace safety, – takes a big slice out of the pie of possible jobs available and reduces the prospects of the poor to become wealthy in the long term.

Government is a Trojan Horse for Environmental Destruction

For all its faults one thing the Government does is protect the environment from profit-seeking corporations, right? Without government to stop them, corporations would just lay waste to the environment in pursuit of the bottom line. That’s the popular view.

An investigation of history might yield some surprises.

There was a time where the courts ruled by common law and were held separately and above the government. When an industrialist polluted  a stream or the air in a way that caused physical or financial harm to his neighbors, the courts would force them to pay reparations and a penalty. This in itself did a pretty good job of deterring people from polluting,

Until the latter part of the nineteenth century this form of law, where the right of every individual were considered, was successful, it stated that if you caused harm or law to another person it was your duty to restore them to their original condition and compensate them. Then, as documented by Morton J. Horowitz in his two-volume treatise named The Transformation of American Law, the legal system began to change. Industrialists went to the government to have it changed.to a more collectivist philosophy where lawyers and law makers became increasingly concerned with what was termed “the common good.”

“Under the individualist view the law should protect everyone’s right to life, liberty and property – which includes the right not to have your body or property damaged by the pollution of others. The new legal system however argued that no individual or group of individuals should stand in the way of the economic progress of the entire community. Therefore a few victims of pollution should not interfere with economic development prospects that would benefit “The greater good.”” (Tom Dilorenzo)

The government came back and told the people that while the factories were polluting and there would be some victims the industry served ‘the common good’ and therefore people just had to accept the pollution as a fact of life ‘in the greater interests of society as a whole’ and all those high minded phrases the left have since appropriated. When you consider history you will see that it is government that made the way for industry inflicting damage on others.

Ep. 19: The TSA is Evil and Stupid, and the Elite are Out of Touch

After a two week hiatus due to intense travel and work schedules, I’m back!  This week I’m discussing the TSA and the horrors through which innocent citizens must go, whenever they travel.  There’s an absurd video interview circulating the interwebs with Michelle Obama that you’ll want to hear.  And finally, I’m going to showcase the … read more

Who is Dissident Mama?

Howdy. I am a chick in rebellion to the status quo. It’s not that I necessarily want to be a rabble rouser. It’s just that by default, everything I do, believe, and say is in direct opposition to either the PC gestapo or the idol of statism – both traffickers and bully enforcers of the sacred cows in our post-modern cesspool of a culture.

“This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang, but a whimper.”

— T.S. Eliot, The Hollow Men

Just like Eliot’s 1925 poem mourns the potent attack on traditionalism by communists and secularists in post-WWI Europe, I lament the abandonment of society’s fleeting foundations in morality, truth, and self-determination. I, however, will not be a hollow man. Silence to the civilization-crushing madness of progressivism is consent and private outrage only emboldens people who castigate me as the enemy. Therefore, I refuse to whimper.

So, I’m going to bang as thunderously as I can through the written word. I’m going to erect “an intellectual barricade,” as sociologist Nikos Sotirakopoulos puts it, to peacefully, yet powerfully oppose leftism and statism and the spread of these freedom-less ideologies.

I have the fighting spirit in my DNA. I was reared in a loud, boisterous, oft-quarreling, but always loving three-generational home. I’m part Scottish, Welsh, and Lebanese, but 100 percent Southern – Virginia born and near 17-year Carolina refugee.

We Dixie rebels do not like being told what to do. We’re a stubborn lot. We debate. We spar. And we disagree, not because we’re disagreeable per se. But because it’s natural and, quite often, necessary.

Interestingly, I was a leftist throughout my 20s, immersing myself in mastering the PC belief system, so I know how progressives think. I became an increasingly ardent feminist as my journey to the dark side unfolded, and by the time I graduated from college in ’99 with a degree in journalism and a minor in women’s studies, my socialist street cred was secure.

Funny thing is, I considered myself so counter-cultural back then, yet what I really doing was swimming with the tide. Most leftists make this same illogical leap. For instance, take my naming of this blog.

The textbook definition of “dissident” is “a person who opposes official policy, especially that of an authoritarian state” and “challenges an established doctrine, policy, or institution.”

Yet, when I was tossing around possible domains, I stumbled upon DissidentMama.com, who describes herself as a “Crunchy, contrarian, liberal, hipster Mom writing about life, parenting, and politics.”

These descriptors are so not dissident. Heck, they’re not even vaguely rebellious. In fact, they’re not only deemed acceptable, but they’re expected and predictable.

Early on, my husband suggested “edgy,” which is defined as “at the forefront of a trend” and is synonymous with “innovative” and “original.” He thought this adjective would be a good available fit for his sassy wife, since leftism isn’t a new trend. Rather, it’s the prevailing orthodoxy because this old, dusty ideology has has staying power, unfortunately.

Interestingly, there were already two other EdgyMama bloggers. One woman describes herself as a “suburban tree-hugger” single mom, who claims that “Chaotic weather events are a hallmark of climate change.” And the other writes about “honoring Mama Earth” and promoting other non-edgy topics, such as “social justice” and “feminism.” Yawn.

I’m not picking on these chicks to be cruel. I’m just taking a closer look at how they define themselves as a way to elucidate their lack of dissidence and edginess. They are the norm. Simply proclaiming yourself a radical nonconformist or a revolutionary trendsetter doesn’t make you one by virtue of misusing words.

I mean, when your thinking is in lockstep with most politicians, public agencies, the courts, schools, universities, libraries, art museums, state-funded “science,” corporations, nonprofits, activist groups, mainline Evangelicals and Jews, the Pope, The World Bank, Hollywood, social media, the mainstream press, advertising, and all the other puritanical purveyors of “acceptable” behavior, you really can’t be more in line with official policy than that. Newsflash: it’s you who’s embracing the status quo.

So, how am I in resistance to the prevailing progressive pandemic? Well, I’m a traditionalist in a time that’s in violent opposition to traditionalism. I’m a Christian, who’s anti-social-justice, which doesn’t bode well for me in most Evangelical circles. I’m an object-truth believer, who’s not a follower of emotion-laden subjective suppositions that specifically seek to coddle and comfort, never challenge or convert. I’m an anti-environmania outdoor enthusiast, who’s passionately pro-fossil fuels because they’re pro-human.

I’m a 16-year-married woman, who’s a willing and happy participant in the “oppressive institution of marriage.” I’m tagged a “feminist sellout” because I proudly bear the last name of my husband. I’m said to be a progressive foe because I quit my white-collar newspaper job to be a stay-at-home mom. I’m called a “breeder” because the grrrrls say I “wasted” my college degree in order to raise three kids. I’m a home educator, who sees the government-school system and universities as mostly places of indoctrination, not learning or critical thinking. I’m a boy mom, who teaches her sons that masculinity is not toxic, but that it’s beautiful and beneficial.

I’m a liberty-lover, who opposes statism. I’m an anti-welfare proponent, who understands that individuals and private organizations are the best and most moral way to provide effective charity to people in need. I’m an anti-warfare advocate, who believes war is the health of the state and that, like many Founders, the U.S. probably shouldn’t even have a standing army.

I’m a states-rights advocate, who doesn’t recite the socialist-penned Pledge of Allegiance because I absolutely do believe in divisibility, free association, and the compact principle. I’m castigated as a “racist” because I promote the South’s rich traditions, display Confederate flags, and talk of the valuable lessons that can be learned from the South, her people, experiences, and heroes. I’m called a “white supremacist” because I’m not guilt-ridden or ashamed of being white, and I understand that all humans have worth and are loved by God. I’m slammed as an “extremist” and a perpetrator of “hate speech” simply because I know that honest discourse is paramount, even if it may hurt someone’s feelings.

I am “Other.” My worldview is deemed defiant and my life choices are scorned by the prevailing cultural tyranny. But I refuse to be cow towed into tacit submission. I won’t be complacent and I won’t comply. So, my plan is to bang the hell out of progressive hegemony and smash those sacred cows whenever and wherever I see them rear their ugly heads. I’ve got my hammer ready, do you?!

The Read Rothbard Podcast – Episode 30 – Sh!tiocracy: A Documentary? (1:20:49)

We discuss the narrative that Idiocracy is currently viewed as a prescient documentary that foretold today’s events regarding Trump being elected President. We argue that this may be true, but not in the way that they think. It is the echo-chamber of social media that allowed people to be blindsided to the Trump-phenomenon and the current attack on “fake news” is only going to double-down on the problem and compound it. This is a pretty fun one that feels like we really hit our stride.

Also, apparently I was not quite right about the water being the only thing that expands. A few more things do…but it’s RARE PEOPLE!

Gallium is a liquid at 85.6 degrees Fahrenheit and expands as it freezes, according to Chemicool. The four other elements that expand when they freeze are silicon, bismuth, antimony and germanium. However, gallium is the only element out of those five that has a melting point near room temperature.

4 Suggestions for Facebook’s “Fake News” Program

Today, Facebook announced that it will be flagging “fake news”. While its not entirely clear where Facebook is going with this, I do have some concerns.

In Facebook’s announcement, it says,

We believe providing more context can help people decide for themselves what to trust and what to share. We’ve started a program to work with third-party fact checking organizations that are signatories of Poynter’s International Fact Checking Code of Principles. We’ll use the reports from our community, along with other signals, to send stories to these organizations. If the fact checking organizations identify a story as fake, it will get flagged as disputed and there will be a link to the corresponding article explaining why. Stories that have been disputed may also appear lower in News Feed.

What most concerns me about this is the power that it gives to news organizations. Facebook is going to be giving a select number of organizations the ability to unilaterally discredit and suppress content.

Given this, I have a few suggestions that can turn this potentially dangerous system into one that could actually be quite beneficial (in order of importance):

  1. Don’t suppress disputed stories. Disputes are not always going to be correct. We can inform people about dissenting viewpoint, but should not prevent them from sharing these stories if they choose to do so. If disputed stories appear lower in the News Feed, this will turn into a subtle form of censorship.
  2. Don’t give a popup warning about disputed content. This does too much to discredit an article in the eye’s of a lay person. Instead, there should be a little icon somewhere by the link that indicates that the content is disputed. An interested user can click on the link to read the rebuttles if they so choose. If there must be a pop-up, it should be when an article is about to be shared– not when it is about to be read.
  3. Allow anyone to dispute stories. Any organization should be able to submit a dispute. Given point 1 & 2, an individual dispute should be less impactful. This eliminates the need to reserve it’s creation for only highly vetted organizations. Debate is important and it’s really easy to get caught in an echo chamber. If everyone had the ability to see both sides of any story, this could be a really positive feature.
  4. Allow users to subscribe to disputers. If a user trusts a certain organization, they may like to be alerted when they click on an article that it has disputed. The difference between this and point 2 is that this system is opt-in and only has user-selected bias. However, this would need to be implemented in a manner that does not push the subscription of certain disputers harder than that of others.

With these changes, I believe that Facebook could make great strides in allowing users to get multiple perspectives while shedding these issues of censorship and bias. Instead of following Poynter’s priciples and claiming to offer objective unbiased fact checking, Facebook should embrace bias and view it as a necessary lens for getting a wholistic picture of reality.

Thank you for reading! Let me know what you think in the comments. Also, please share this article to help encourage Facebook to make these changes. They are currently on the fence about point 1, and we need to nudge them in the right direction.
