even if you don’t want war you’re Hitler

I find you know like I I want no wars at

all and I’m Hitler I don’t understand

how that could be I mean it wasn’t

militarism kind of central to the whole

thing so anyway so I’m gonna be looking

more broadly at economic thought and

maybe social philosophy a bit with with

doing this as I say partly because the

term fascism and to a lesser extent Nazi

about the definition of fascism I would

probably not get something very close to

the dictionary definition so I thought

some of the kinds of themes that I’m

in some sectors of the ideological

spectrum out there even today and it’s

almost spooky how similar they are now I

recall back when I was first teaching I

was still getting my PhD but I had taken

a job in the meanwhile at a community

college and at that college I was

required to take a ten

and I thought this is just insult take

attendance in college you know but

they asked me to do but what I did was I

just passed the sheet of paper around

Ask any libertarian about why libertarianism and there is a story about the time BBL: before being libertarian. I have mine, too.

The key point I came to learn about libertarianism is the NAP, the Non-Aggression Principle. Sounds easy enough. Don’t hurt people.

Listen to a libertarian long enough and you’ll hear something about taxation is theft: property rights.

There are discussions aplenty about the unconstitutionality of taxation, the immorality of taxation, the lack of need for taxation and more. Passions run deep on both sides of the position and those lines can broadly be understood to be the libertarians against taxation and the statist for taxation. Taxation as theft produces a second phrase to our NAP, and the two are cleverly synthesized to “Don’t Hurt People; Don’t Take Their Stuff.”

That’s where I came in. Don’t hurt people seems pretty cut and dried. Don’t aggress: easy. The clarification we make is offensive aggression. People have a right to defend themselves, so defensive aggression against harm done to me or my family is allowed, and maybe even demanded.

Hurt not; steal not. I can do this. As I listened and read and watched more libertarian thinkers, I came to learn who the heavy hitters are. And, boy, we’ve got some doozies. Hans Herman Hoppe and Murray Rothbard and Walter Block and Ludwig von Mises and Tom Woods the list grows. I admit, I didn’t know that libertarians had a thought process. I really thought that a libertarian was a disgruntled Republican who didn’t want to affiliate any longer. I was wrong.

Don’t aggress is easy when it’s you not aggressing. What of the state or the military or the police? Well, come on, that doesn’t happen. It does. That it does is bothersome and, frankly, both scary and unsettling.

At a point like this, with the curtain pulled back, there are two choices. Run or push on. I pushed on. I learned that the state does aggress in forms less than obvious. Yeah, there is that taxation thing. I know I said it was stealing, but what if you don’t pay? The state will come and, after haggling, you still refuse to pay, put you in a cage.

Libertarian thought provides more than a few rabbit holes for investigation and I’ve taken a few of the economic tracts and what-has-the-government-done-with-our-money tracts, and was pleased with that growing knowledge. I’ve known the other rabbit holes were there, but you can’t read everything all at once.

So, we depend on podcasts and other libertarians for illumination in areas we do not. It happens there are more than a few libertarian podcasts to listen to.   I started my journey in earnest with Tom Woods. He’s been podcasting since 2009 and has recorded over 1000 episodes at 5 a week. I’ve “met” some amazing and smart people on his show and I’m the better for it. There is also Dave Smith, the comedian. (We’ve also Penn of Penn and Teller).

Recently Tom was on Dave’s show, “Part Of The Problem”, and Tom was talking about his recent visit to yet another show. This host asked about libertarianism in that same way everyone does who thinks the main reason is we want to get baked. Naw, man. Tom’s retelling of the conversation was a concise, specific answer to a very complicated question. Here is most of his retelling of that event:

I’ve never actually smoked pot which is probably . . . I may be the only person . . . I don’t think [there’s] people who can say this. My view is, if people are doing that or even if they’re using harder drugs that may actually do them some damage, the question is what’s the best way to approach that? What’s gonna happen if you put these people in prison? Prison rape is not the best solution to their problem. There has to be a solution better than that. So, what I explained to him is that libertarianism has nothing to do with preferences for “I’d like to smoke this or I’d like to do that” it has to do with property and the right to exchange and own and defend your property. So, the war on drugs is a violation of the right of property, and that’s why we’re against it. And then, of course, it has a lot of subsidiary damages that it does, but it’s primarily because it violates property rights which is a form of aggression, and we’re against aggression. So, my argument, I explained, is just simply we don’t favor initiating aggression. Our whole principle is don’t initiate aggression; keep your hands to yourself. He came back with, “doesn’t everybody believe that?” And I said, “they say they do,” but when push comes to shove and they see where we’re taking it, they’re not necessarily willing to follow us along on that path. He said, “Where are you taking them? Where would this go that people might not approve of it?”

And I said, “Alright, let’s abolish all the anti-trust laws, now where’s everybody on non-aggression? Let’s abolish the minimum wage, now where’s everybody? See, I’m losing people all the time just talking to you here.”

Libertarianism was kind of this milquetoast I want to smoke some pot and maybe lower my taxes but I really want to smoke the pot, that really is the top thing. 

[Libertarianism is] a whole way of thinking and it’s a way of thinking that generates amazing results, and once you understand the idea of liberty, you never look at the world the same way again. You get to the heart of some much that’s wrong with society, why the economy goes in the tank every once in a while, you begin to understand that. You understand the FED. The FED is also engaged in forms of aggression, indirectly, because it’s a coercive monopoly. There’s so many ways you see the world differently. You look at war differently and foreign policy differently. You don’t think of it as us –v- them, you just think of it as them –v- them.

Them –v- them. I shared with a friend of mine that I was so happy Tom said that. I had been feeling that I was starting to see myself a bit removed from the daily idiocy of politics. That validated my thoughts in a way that confirmed I was on the right path. I have miles to go before I sleep, but it’s nice to know I am facing forward.

The R and D have a lot of silliness to them. I think that there are many very good people in each party who want good things even if they don’t know how to get there. The Libertarian party is not immune from party idiocy. They, the big L, have had a few real bad moments in the past few months, but we little l libertarians continue. We continue seeking an elimination to government.

The Anarchy movement is immediately scary for the name alone. Nearly everyone, me included, gets it wrong, thinking anarchy is chaos. Webster’s helps little but does offer the proper definition summarized thus: No rulers; not no rules. The positive expression is Rules: not rulers.

What that means is a government in a state capital miles from you, or a federal government even further from you cannot know what is the best thing for you, her or that guy over there. If there needs to be a government (we are not convinced there does), then having that governing body as close to you as possible, say your township or maybe county, is obviously better than a bigger government miles removed from you. The next time you hear a candidate talk about small government, I’ll wager that is not the plan.

Libertarianism seems scary to people for they cannot conceive of a solution to do the things the state does. No state? Well, who will build the roads? There is no service we need from the government that cannot be done better and cheaper by private business. Most of the time, a government hires a private contractor to make the roads, so let us cut out the middle-man. I engage a few very nice, sincere people who love their kids and cannot image how life would continue if the government went away. These smart people become babbling babes with “Yeah, but”s, and :”What about”s. The state is their security blanket but they don’t know how strong they can be without it. Or, a more grown up version is Plato’s cave. Same idea.

Libertarians want liberty. Liberty to make the decisions which are best for each of us. I cannot possible be informed well enough to make a good decision for you. No person can, but we somehow forget that when a person says, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” Oh, Heavens no. By what mechanism is that person imbued with knowledge to accomplish that task? To borrow from Nigel in This Is Spinal Tap, “None.”

To borrow more, and this time a timely football analogy, get off the field, look at the game from the stands. It looks completely different and it hurts less. See the action from without and see what you have been missing.

Re: the store appearing at Jack, it appears they are trying to legitimize Weld as a Libertarian. Clearly he is not, whether he is a card carrying party member or not. They are probably posting articles like this to come across as Libertarians.

Joe G. Sir, do you realize this was posted on a Weld/Johnson shill site? Do you think the LP should allow those who clearly do not hold the principles of Liberty (like Weld) to run for President/Vice President?

Mike C. The problem is that the primary people driving people to leave the LP just so happen to be… the leadership of the LP. We need the LP to stop attacking libertarians.

We need well-read people of intelligence, honesty and integrity at the head of the LP, and sadly, at the moment, we don’t have that.

Matt B. What type of qualities should an LP Chairman have?

What needs to happen for the LP to be the Rothbardian and Ron Paulian version of libertarianism? Brody R. Especially considering some members of the LP don’t accept private property norms. Think rent is theft, capitalism is evil, etc.

Ken B. How is his position on abortion not like inviting someone to live with you and then shooting them for trespass?

Jeff C. Yeah. Ask him if he still holds to this position:

“Would it ever be possible, under libertarian law, for a baby to be abandoned by its parents… and the baby be relegated to death? Yes.”

Keith T. I realize I’m a newbie to the LPMC, but we should be rallying behind the LP to support it not driving people to leave.

For those who feel changes are needed in the LP, the surest way is to make that change happen through positive action, not withholding support or negative attacks.

The LP gets enough negative attacks on a daily basis and we have a thick skin. That’s not the way we better the Party.

If you think we should have better marketing, step up and volunteer at Design for Liberty.

If you think the website needs to be better, volunteer to be on the I.T. committee – they need people badly.

If you think the LNC needs different representation, run for the LNC or at the very least contact your regional or at-large rep about it where something can be done.

If you think the LP should field better Presidential candidates, court people to run. Be a delegate. Get involved. The LP is primarily volunteer driven; that’s one of the best things about the Party. If you want change, you can make it happen. The same cannot be said for the old parties.

Josh F. Does anyone else think the elite (political elite not Tom Woods elite) use the left right paradigm to keep us divided and therefore easier to rule over us? I’m very frustrated that this is leaking into the libertarian movement. It is tearing us apart and not helpful. I’m all for debated what liberty or anarchy looks like, or should look like, but how about we work together to dismantle government before we start arguing with each other about the minutia.

Direct quote from Nicholas Sarwark during his discussion/debate on JSP, “Part of the reason they [white supremacists] like Tom Woods libertarianism and The Mises Institute libertarianism because it follows a Hoppian line that says that we can exclude people that are not like us from our communities or from our property and people who want to set up a white ethno state like it if your movement says, “Yup, that’s totally ok and fits into libertarianism”.”

My take, the L.P. Chair just negated the idea that you don’t have property rights. How can we have this? Is he suggesting the L.P. stands for a hand interfering saying an institution can negate this? If that is the case, where does that “protective” government hand stop in accordance to Sarwark’s ideology? Sounds very Marxist to me.

Actually, after Sarwark’s pathetic showing on JSP, I think it might be time to create a libertarian right alternative to the L.P. for people that are followers of Tom, Jason, and Dave Smith to join since Sarwark made it very obvious many of us aren’t members, and Jason made the point that it’s because it doesn’t reflect a lot of our values anymore. What would be a good party alternative name that keeps a libertarian theme to it to be marketable to people who may not have yet been exposed to our complete ideals but know of some of our pillars in the political main stream? The Taxation is Theft Party? The Libertarian Bull Elk Party? I’m curious.

Mark D. It’s time to rally behind the truth that politics is the sham belief that power protects liberty. Nothing is more disingenuous than that type of claim.

America was indeed a conception of liberty. As many conceptions go, the execution fails to live up to the promise.

Democracy is soft #Collectivism and the additional concept that we are condemned to live as prisoners of a failed ruse on the part of the Founders using the illegitimate concept of Social Contract is as irksome as scabes. The only thing contracted was an infection of Police Statism, the original Social Disease.

Ryan M. Ask him about his certainty concerning the downward sloping demand curve for labor. That’s awesome that he’s coming on for an interview!

Russ L. One thing that gnawed at me about Sarwark’s focus on votes as a metric of success: if all the LP focused on was becoming a lite version of either the Republicans or Democrats, who the hell cares how many votes it got? Can Sarwark point to any impact the LP had on the national debate? Did either Clinton or Trump have to address any libertarian/NAP points because either Johnson or Weld forced them to? Absolutely not. If anything, Weld did more harm than good by giving more positive press to Clinton than to his freaking running mate! Which makes his focus on the intellectual leaders of the libertarian movement that much more infuriating. He’s far more interested in getting numbers than making sure people understand the libertarian message. In other words, he’s just another politico. Why bother working with a tiny political party if it’s going to fail on the very metric it’s going to use as a measure of success?

Happy Father’s Day! With many movies to choose from, we were happy to choose one that is a favorite of our guest: Finding Nemo. The story of one father’s quest to save his last-surviving child. He overcomes the trauma of losing his wife and most of his other kids to travel thousands of miles from home encountering killer sharks, war refuse mines, surfer turtles dude-bruh, stinging jellyfish (don’t tase me bro!), and a forgetful friend.

There’s a self-proclaimed intellectual tribe which believes in a contradictory premise and that is “removing 80% of the tumor solves the cancer, while the remaining 20% should be left intact”.

It is just not a belief but also a modern ideology. They worship this political ideology, like the way jihadists worship Islam, but without directly initiating violence. The tribe also believes that it is morally correct to have freedom in all economic activities because they trust the principles of government-constituted free market.

When it comes to defense, police and courts or law, the tribe would not mind distrusting the principles of laissez-faire. To add, the tribe does not realise that it suffers from a psychotic disorder called ‘stockholm syndrome’ (which means, sympathising with the crime doer).

For example: they chant, blog & podcast “government is evil” (without realising that they’re the ones who are always eager to necessitate the evil at the expense of everyone else). They tend to forget that ‘limiting’ the evil does not equate to abolishment of evil.

Evil is evil, no matter what’s the size of it.

I do not intend to bash these intellectuals in this article. I am simply analysing their unnoticed hypocrisy.

Drink in the hypocrisy of minarchism

What makes their myth so different from other political ideologies like democracy, communism, etc., when their own ideology is a diet coke of all the fascist tendencies?

On one hand, they condemn monopoly of the state. I think it makes sense because monopoly over the means of production is the root cause of all problems in our world.

On the other hand, the tribe believes that a magical constitution would suddenly beget “good governance” administered by a “good government”, out of nowhere, in the complex world.

In this regard, how would they behave with their own dissents if the constitution is deemed as a social contract?   A constitution is just not a rule book but also a “social contract”, which makes citizens (slaves) to pay obligation to their master (government) without signing the agreement et al.

This is where the tribe consciously fail to realise with their own eyes that government is a lie.

The goodness is a lie

Governments are “malum in se” (evil in itself) in their nature and violate the non-aggression principle (an ethical stance which asserts that “aggression” is inherently illegitimate).

In this case, let’s assume that taxation is not a legal robbery. Then, why would a ‘limited’ government continue to conscript people’s wealth for the sake of building the roads? What is the fair percentage to consider that taxation is a not a legal theft, when any “illegal” mafia gang can also empower itself to expropriate the people?

While these philosophers continue to claim that the emergence of a government is inevitable and that therefore efforts must be concentrated towards establishing a “minimal government” to protect freedom, but then it cannot prevent its collapse or political suicide without compromising all of its laws and principles.

For example: How would it decide the rate of defence expenditure without inflating the public funds for defence services, which is likely to maximize the monopoly, tax structure and power of the minimal government?

I suggest you to apply the same reasoning/question/logic to “priority sectors” like fiscal policy with reference to populism, monetary policy with reference to printing machine, and property rights with reference to eminent domain.

As the American Experiment has proven, a mechanism like constitutional check-and-balance has not been successful in stemming the tide of governmental expansion. Checks and balances are not enough to successfully distract the members of the ruling class from their convergent interests, since, checks or not, they are still all part of the same parasitical entity.

Checks and balances? Circular reasoning.

An exterior standard alone is also not sufficient to stop the governmental expansion. A piece of paper or constitution is only somewhat obeyed as long as its legitimacy remains: the more misinterpreted and controversial it becomes, the least protection it affords against the government’s expansion.

To conclude, coercion cannot produce cooperation.

My facebook note highlights a case of the minimal government sustaining corporatism. Governments are not, and cannot, be based on consent. It is mathematically impossible to maintain a government over a territory of any considerable size without imposing some non-consensual rules.

Furthermore, no government has ever been founded on consent. All governments are based on the necessity for victorious warring factions to organize the taking of tribute from conquered factions, to make organized theft less risky and more profitable. All other governments derived from those have come to existence through ruling class conflicts or colonial politics.

In short, consent of the vast majority of people is nowhere involved in the process of government-creation.

The Libertarian Party is a waste, an absolute cesspool of nonsense.

Instead of promoting what should be the most consistent ideology in politics (the opposition to violence against peaceful people), they sit and argue over whether they should be Republican Lite or Democrat Lite, or in other words anti-tax liberals or pro-pot conservatives.

We are not “socially accepting and fiscally responsible”. We do not fight for any particular race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or miscellaneous.

Rather, we fight against the encroaching power of the state, and the rest fall into line. We do not promote or disparage culture or values, or encourage opinions or beliefs. That is for the realm of the family and social organizations. A religious organization has just as much right to state their views an individual. But we do not fight for religion any more than we fight for homosexuality. Rather we fight for the rights of the religious and the homosexual.

We fight for freedom of association and freedom of property.

Truth be told, property is the only real right at all. On private property, one has the right to limit speech or any other behavior that they choose. It is when the state, a gang of thieves writ at large, own property that there is a disconnect in rights and justice.

It has become fashionable amongst the beltway to pander to the mainstream by condemning the two individuals most responsible for the party being where it is at.

What is this clown thinking?

Were it not for Ron Paul, the LP would be a handful of people meeting in someone’s garage. Were it not for Murray Rothbard, there would probably be no LP, but the classical liberal revival would have followed Milton Friedman and been sucked into and swallowed whole by the Republican Party.

How well does pandering work? Ask Rand Paul who pandered to the conservative base, then ask Trump, who panders to no one. People are thirsty for a revolution from the status quo. The tactics of shouting down the opposition with accusations of bigotry and the thought control by the media have been rejected. What the world needs is a radical shift in the paradigm, not virtue signaling.

We are libertarians, not contestants in a Miss America Pageant.
