Are we approaching an Alaric Moment?

Alaric was the famous Visigoth King that led the sack of Rome in 410. The sack is usually highlighted as the decisive event that led to the decline of the Roman Empire. However, that fateful event took place after the culmination of several barbarian invasions of the empire.

Given the United States’ insistence in pursuing a suicidal foreign policy, regardless of either the results or the consequences, it would be imprudent to discount the possibility of similar movements of displaced peoples. After all, when Obama continued America’s reckless foreign policy across North Africa, the Middle East, and Yemen, is it any wonder that over 2 million refugees currently reside in Turkey?

Turkey has received €3 billion from the European Union in exchange for keeping those refugees within its borders, and is slated to received an additional €3 billion by the end of 2018. However, given the recent tensions between Turkey and the Netherlands due to the Dutch government’s refusal to allow Turkish officials to speak in Holland about an upcoming Turkish referendum, Turkey decided to threaten Europe with a move that would truly blow their minds:

Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu threatened to “blow the mind” of Europe by sending 15,000 refugees a month to EU territory, in an intensifying dispute with the bloc. The threat is also a confirmation that for Turkey, refugees are merely a form of “weaponized” leverage in the escalating war of words between the country and Europe.

“If you want, we could open the way for 15,000 refugees that we don’t send each month and blow the mind” of Europe, Soylu said in a speech late Thursday, quoted by the Anadolu news agency. Soylu, a hardliner considered close to Erdogan, accused The Hague and Berlin of involvement in June 2013 anti-Erdogan protests, October 2014 pro-Kurdish riots and the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt.

Not to put too fine a point on this, what Soylu threatened was to send tens of thousands of migrants into Europe as weapons. Such a move would, indeed, be an act of war.

Soylu most likely made this threat as a negotiating tactic with Europe. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make sense to issue a threat unless there are dire consequences should it be carried out.

Meantime, there are untold numbers of homeless refugees who are being played as pawns in this Satanic game of chicken.

It behooves us to monitor this situation very closely.

Saint Augustine, pray for us!
