Episode 66 – Cars (54:23)

We get our kicks on Route 66 doing an analysis of the Disney/Pixar film, Cars.  It has a luddite-ish “buy local” message, which has a nostalgic element, but at a cost of a lower standard of living. Still, there is enough story and character arc to make it a pleasant enough watch.

Pixar has the strings on the heart tuned, and however misguided their economic thinking, they are maestros when it comes to eliciting the feelz.

The movie follows the death of a community with the implementation of the Interstate Highway System. The filmmakers had done a cross-country drive and seen a PBS Documentary called “Divided Highways” that contributed to the overall concept of the story here.

Built for military and subsidizing the growth of car culture, led to white flight and along with the war on poverty, the ghettos of the inner cities and the ghost towns of the West. We see an example of this with the derelict town of “Radiator Springs”.

In present day we are seeing the reverse as people fed up with long commutes, bland cookie cutter neighborhoods and strip malls to “gentrify” the cities seeking more culture and consolidation into a fusion of utopian fantasy and progressive politics. They are now an echo chamber of feels over reals emotional thinkers that have wrought a deeper division in this country than the highways themselves.

BTW, I liked this movie better the first time, when it was called “Doc Hollywood”.

Boys Night Out – a livestream conversation with guests about the movies and anything else that comes up. This brings back guests to our show and the organic laid back vibe. WE are doing the first episode tonight at 6pm PT / 9pm ET on the Actual Anarchy YouTube channel with guests Sherry Voluntary and Kyle Mamounis to discuss our recent episode on Blade Runner 2049, which can be found at www.actualanarchy.com/65

Google Description

While traveling to California to race against The King (Richard Petty) and Chick Hicks (Michael Keaton) for the Piston Cup Championship, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) becomes lost after falling out of his trailer in a run down town called Radiator Springs. While there he slowly befriends the town’s odd residents, including Sally (Bonnie Hunt), Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). When it comes time for him to leave to championship is no longer his top priority.

Here is the documentary “Divided Highways” which is a history of the interstate highway system replacing the “mother roads” such as Route 66, praised as the biggest/best public works project in history:

And here is another video that was produced by Caterpillar about the construction of the Interstate Highway System:

Here is my appearance with fellow members of the Libertarian Union,  Liberty Weekly and Don’t Waste Your Hate discussing the place of libertarianism in relation to the “culture war”:

Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Actual Anarchy Podcast!

The Actual Anarchy Podcast is all about Maximum Freedom.

Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. If it’s voluntary, we’re cool with it. If it’s not, then it violated the Non-Aggression Principle and Property Rights – the core tenants of Libertarian Theory – and hence – human freedom.

We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter.

We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film.

The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film.

We publish new episodes on Sunday just in time for your Monday commute; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics).

For our show where we talk about movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective, we often watch them on our various devices via Netflix, Amazon Prime or on VUDU (which lets you redeem UV content as well). The VUDU one is nice because once it is in there, you know it will still be there a few months later:
