Episode 107 – Outlaw King (1:18:29)

We welcome Olof the Anarcho-Viking to discuss a film about the King of the Scots, Robert the Bruce and his struggle for a more local authority against King Edward of England in the new Netflix movie starring Chris Pine, Outlaw King.

This episode features the work of Hans-Hermann Hoppe, and specifically his book, Democracy the God that Failed, prominently.

This is essentially the continuing saga of the struggle of the Scots to be free of foreign rule that could be considered a sequel to Braveheart.

Our guest moved from Sweden to Italy to New York to California to Florida.

He is well-read on Hans-Hermann Hoppe and has written several articles clarifying the misperceptions regarding the man and his work:

During the show we mentioned many different things, linked below:

Ralph Raico – Miracle of Europe

“The Rise of the West”
Raico, History of Liberty (2001)
https://mises.org/library/rise-west-0

“The Industrial Revolution”
Raico, Mises University (2001)
https://mises.org/library/industrial-revolution

Ralph Raico recommended this book in his talk on the Industrial Revolution. This book outlines the cause and events of the Irish Potato Famine and why it got as bad as it did.

“In The Noblest Triumph, Tom Bethell looks at the history of property rights and shows that the key role played by the institution of private property has been misunderstood by Western elites for more than a century.

Beginning with the ancient Greeks and arriving at the present day, Bethell looks at basic ideas about property found in the writings of Plato, Adam Smith, Blackstone, Bentham, Marx, Mill, and others.

He shows that the institution of property is inextricably tied to traditional conceptions of justice and liberty, and he argues that prosperity and civilization can only arise where private property is securely held by the people. The Noblest Triumph is an indispensable book for anyone interested in this fundamental aspect of civilization and the progress of humankind through the ages.”

Here is the Larken Rose video, “If You Were King” that goes through the logic behind why even a benevolent king cannot be truly moral:

Menken and Mises quotes:

“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag; and begin slitting throats.” – H.L. Mencken

“Violent resistance against the power of the state is the last resort of the minority in its effort to break loose from the oppression of the majority. The minority that desires to see its ideas triumph must strive by intellectual means to become the majority.” – Ludwig von Mises

Many of the points discussed are related to Hans-Hermann Hoppe’s excellent book, “Democracy the God that Failed”.

Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Actual Anarchy Podcast!

The Actual Anarchy Podcast is all about Maximum Freedom.

Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. If it’s voluntary, we’re cool with it. If it’s not, then it violated the Non-Aggression Principle and Property Rights – the core tenants of Libertarian Theory – and hence – human freedom.

We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter.

We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film.

The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film.

We publish new episodes on Sunday just in time for your Monday commute; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics).

For our show where we talk about movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective, we often watch them on our various devices via Netflix, Amazon Prime or on VUDU (which lets you redeem UV content as well). The VUDU one is nice because once it is in there, you know it will still be there a few months later:
