Episode 241 – Jaws (1:39:03)

We are joined by Snobby Bobby of the Not For Everyone Podcast to talk about a 4th of July-ish film with a review of “Jaws”.

When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it’s up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down. This was the original summer blockbuster and set the trend for Hollywood studios for a generation.

We’re going to need a bigger podcast to contain this discussion. Don’t go in the water!

We’re also proud to announce that our YouTube video for this episode now features actual video footage of the show, check it out here, and be sure to hit that subscribe button!

Jaws

When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Our Guest:

Snobby Bobby of the Not For Everyone Podcast is a three-time guest and despite the strong disagreement with Robert on Demolition Man (which I think makes a better episode!) we expect him to join us again in the future for more episodes.

His podcast is described thusly:

Trigger Warning – Explicit Complaining – ‘Not For Everyone’ is a podcast featuring two cynical man-children that primarily explore the deep cuts of schlock horror/sci-fi/fantasy films made in the 70s, 80s, and 90s as well as their flawed friendship. These fellas also spend the first 30 – 40 minutes of each episode just BSing about random adjacent topics such comics, heavy metal, bigfoot, death row meals and half-assed paranormal investigation adventures.

Host Heroes: John Carpenter, Fred Dekker. Stan Winston, Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, Glenn Danzig and Dracula.

Here are his previous appearances:

Episode 220 – Big Trouble in Little China (1:22:45)

Episode 213 – Contact (1:38:58)

Episode 202 – Demolition Man (1:34:43)

Episode 188 – The Patriot (1:29:06)

Show Notes:

“Get out of the Grocery!” was the cry in one of the greatest wealth transfers from the little guy to the big guys in history. As Bob Murphy pointed out, the lockdowns prevented innovation and choice in addition to corralling people into closer contact with each other in the fewer/larger stores that remained open vs. leaving everything open and allowing entrepreneurs to cater to different risk levels leading to not only dispersed density but also in discovering knowledge about what works and what doesn’t through the magic of the market.

Working within constraints to make a better product. Kept having problems with the shark, so they had to keep it off screen more than they had intended – but this actually makes it more suspenseful. Robot Chicken spoof makes fun of this with some ridiculous “missing scenes”.

Mallrats T.S. Quint proposes when Jaws pops out of the water – Quint and Brody names shared

Scientific Bureaucrats thought they were being Brody by warning of a danger that was being ignored by the OrangeManBad.

Turns out, it’s actually the opposite when it comes to da jabs. Numbers are being manipulated or ignored to minimize the signal vs. when it was on the other end, they were doing whatever they could to pump those rookie numbers up.

Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Actual Anarchy Podcast!

The Actual Anarchy Podcast is all about Maximum Freedom.

Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. If it’s voluntary, we’re cool with it. If it’s not, then it violated the Non-Aggression Principle and Property Rights – the core tenants of Libertarian Theory – and hence – human freedom.

We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter.

We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film.

The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film.

We publish new episodes on Sunday just in time for your Monday commute; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics).

For our show where we talk about movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective, we often watch them on our various devices via Netflix, Amazon Prime or on VUDU (which lets you redeem UV content as well). The VUDU one is nice because once it is in there, you know it will still be there a few months later:

ABOUT

Actual Anarchy, an anarchy unlike what the average idiot thinks it would be. Anarchy means no rulers, not no rules. The non-aggression principle and a respect of property rights are what makes it go.

We host a podcast where we take pop culture movies and showcase moments or scenes or themes throughout that are literally actual examples of anarchy.

Any place, around the world, there are always examples of Actual Anarchy all about you. Sometimes you just have to sit back and take a look. It’s easy once they’ve been pointed out a few times.

Actual Anarchy is real-world examples of anarchy in action.

Movies, Shows, Books, News, etc… we host all sorts of content on the site from a bevy of writers enthusiastic for one goal: human freedom
